Professor Julian Hughes
Julian C. Hughes is RICE Professor of Old Age Psychiatry at Bristol University. He was previously Honorary Professor of Philosophy of Ageing at Newcastle University and remains a visiting professor there. He has been elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. His single author books are: Thinking Through Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias and How We Think About Dementia. He has been an adviser to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in connection with dementia, ethics and palliative care and in connection with the last days of life. He has served on a GMC Task and Finish Group looking at guidance on consent and he is currently on the Clinical Advisory Board of the Journal of Medical Ethics. Until 2019 he served as a member and as Deputy Chair of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.
