Elaine Boland has been a consultant in palliative medicine in Hull and East Riding Hospitals since August 2012. She qualified in medicine from the University of Malta in 2002, and did her general medical training and MRCP there before coming to the UK in 2006. She worked in oncology and then as a registrar in palliative medicine in Sheffield. For her PhD, she studied the brain processing of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in patients with multiple myeloma as well as assessing their quality of life and symptom burden. She is currently developing the services for patients with non-malignant diseases in Hull and East Riding. She is a member of the Science Committee for the Association of Palliative Medicine. She is an honorary senior lecturer for Hull York Medical School. She lectures at local and national conferences, and teaches to students, nurses and all grades of doctors. She is the shortcut editor for the BMJ Supportive and Palliative Care journal and Deputy Associate Editor for the palliative care section of Supportive Care in Cancer journal.
